I say I'm pretty good with cars, I can do much of the maintenance/surfacy things, and diagnose my own problems. However, I want to start doing or sophisticated repairs (injectors, a/c, electrical, etc.), but the Lumina isn't set up like any other car I've had (for example, the battery is underneath the washer fluid reservoir.
Yeah, that's right. Access to the a/c lines is UNDER everything else), etc. Whoever designed this thing is an idiot. I'm looking for a decent repair manual that can help me out step by step for this particular vehicle. What do you guys recommend? I saw but it's for the Century, Lumina, Grand Prix, and Intrigue. Which yeah, have basically same frame/engine setup, but I would like something more specifically for the Lumina/Monte Carlo, if it exists.
Any Suggestions? I'd like to be able to order it from Amazon if possible (I need to get something else, and might as well order it at the same time). If not, that's fine too. Can you get a factory service manual? I saw one on ebay for $25 - some set of 3 from a chevy dealership or something. I've never used those 3rd party books like Haynes or Chilton, just ones from Honda/Toyota.

They walk you through step by step on pretty much everything - how to take out parts/testing/special tools. Edit: does this count as being from amazon? The honda odyssey manual I've got is 3x the size of the fort worth phone book and 1000+ pages - was $60 I think and walks you through every conceivable thing - all perfectly clear. Both the Chilton and the Haynes are fine if you are used to the limitations in them. When I was a mechanic we always said keep them close to the toilet in case we run out of toilet paper. Seriously, you want something like a Motors manual or the factory service manual.

Of course a mechanic wants a factory manual I'd be a little wary of a mech who even had a consumer level book in his shop. But if he just needs simple repairs and the location of various parts a Haynes or Chilton will work just fine. For example, I have the FSM manual for my jeep in PDF form on my PC, but I always look at my Haynes first and it almost always answer my question just fine. I think the use of an FSM for you average DIYer changing his brakes or alternator is a bit of overkill and overstated around here. The factory service manual is the best thing out there. However, it too can be lacking. I've found information in Mitchell manuals that wasn't in the factory manual, but that can be a fluke case.
Get the factory manual to start. It will give you better torque specs, proper procedures, and some cases, the almighty part numbers. If you really want to get in depth, get the parts manual too, if you can. I've got one for my old truck and it's SPECTACULAR for exploded drawings and different views of components.
