Most people are used to watching New York City police officers, captains, sergeants and lieutenants chase down criminals in all forms of popular fiction, but it creates some confusion about what each rank actually does. In reality, the NYPD has an hierarchy with each rank carrying out specific duties, more driven by paperwork and supervisory roles than by pounding a beat on the street. Job Description The goal of the NYPD is to ensure the constitutional rights of all citizens while preserving a safe environment that ensures the reduction of fear, the preservation of peace and the enforcement of laws. No matter their rank, all officers are tasked with protecting life and property.
Generally, NYPD duties are enforcing laws, conducting patrols, issuing citations, investigating crimes, collecting evidence, arresting suspects, completing paperwork and testifying in court. Rank Structure The basic structure of the NYPD, from lowest rank to highest, is: recruit officer, probationary police officer, police officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, deputy inspector, inspector, deputy chief, assistant chief, bureau chief, chief of department. The NYPD also divides its police force into enforcement bureaus, which have their own precincts, patrol areas, units and detectives, often with specific focuses and duties. This provides officers with the opportunity to work in areas that include housing, internal affairs, operations, community affairs, or juvenile justice. The starting salary for an NYPD officer is $42,500 as of 2018 with the average pay after 5.5 years of service reaching $85,292. Detectives The duties of an NYPD detective vary based on his assigned unit. A narcotics detective’s daily routine is different than one working in homicide.
But all NYPD detectives perform investigative work, including interviewing suspects and witnesses, conducting surveillance, collecting evidence, completing various reports, making arrests and testifying. A detective is a discretional promotion made after an officer has served on patrol for several years and a minimum of 18 months in an investigative unit. The rank progresses from third grade to first grade.
The top base salary of detective is $87,278. Sergeant A sergeant is a field supervisor usually responsible for patrol officers. He provides duty instructions and supervises police activity at an operational level, which includes implementing orders, investigating police misconduct, maintaining discipline and ensuring the punctuality of officers.
The rank involves several administrative duties, including report writing, safeguarding evidence, coordinating field activities and evaluating personnel. As of 2016, the minimum salary of the rank is $84,248. Lieutenant A lieutenant supervises the day-to-day work of a bureau, squad or unit. He could be assigned as a platoon commander, operations coordinator or control officer.
He evaluates the work of his officers and reviews concerns of his first-line officers. Lieutenants conduct roll call, make personnel assignments and maintain department property. In addition to implementing orders from above, he must also work as a coordinator at scenes and secure evidence.
He is responsible for directing arrest processing and the holding of prisoners. Rather than just filling reports and logs, this position reviews a great deal of paperwork. As of 2017, the minimum salary of a lieutenant is $107,830. Captain Captains work as commanders and administrators of a precinct, unit, squad or bureau.
It is a supervisory role, responsible for ensuring officers are performing their duties properly. It requires him to investigate and report on his subordinates and police activities.
He may receive special assignments, duties or orders from the police commissioner. In addition to writing and reviewing paperwork and reports, captains participate in meetings and other administrative duties. As of 2018, the minimum salary of a captain is $121,442.

I have many years (40) of LEO experience in many agencies/states and chose to model my current department after the NYPD because I have a great respect for that agency and I like the organization and structure. Wouldn't you want to rely on the Virginia State Police or local sheriff's office to investigate major crimes on your campus?We do utilize our local county PD if needed, however, we still do many other investigations on campus that are not criminal as well, like background investigations. Now, here in Virginia, a victim has the choice of whether a criminal investigation will take place or not. It is never forced. That is their state right, but we still have to do a campus investigation in case the victim has a change of heart later. In general, I chose the NYPD as my model agency.

If you have forty years on the job and think the NYPD is a model law enforcement agency, you need to get out more lol. All the departments that surround NYC do everything the exact opposite. NYPD.what's left is right and what's up is down. In general, I chose the NYPD as my model agency.

Morale of the officers serving under you is important as well. Structure is a only a guideline suited to the mission of your agency.
It is not uncommon in rural upstate New York to see three (or more) different police agencies serve the community. We have NYSP, County Sheriff, numerous town PDs, NYSDEC environmental police and NYCDEC Bureau of water supply police.
