1. 2017 Yamaha Xt250 Service Manual

Not saying you should or shouldn't do it yourself, but if the XT250 is similiar to the XT225, it takes a lot more than 5 minutes. I did my 2007 XT225, and as I recall, you first have to remove the side covers, then the seat to gain access to the bolt that holds the fuel tank on. Then you had to remove the two 'wings' in front and below the tank before pulling the tank. Then remove the valve adjuster access caps.

Then two small covers on the left side of the engine.One to access a bolt to turn the engine over, and the other to see the timing mark. Then you turn the engine over until the mark lines up and you have a 50-50 chance of being at TDC firing stroke.If your not (check this by seeing if both valves have some freeplay at the rockers), then rotate one time back to the mark and recheck. Verify your at TDC firing stroke.Then and only then can you do the adjustment. Adjust them on the wrong stroke and your valves will be WAT to loose.

Then assemble everything and test ride. This is not a five minute job. If you have done it before once or twice, maybe a 45 minute job.

The first time will take longer.
