Hello to all. I am new here. I know this is probably a topic that has been around before but i have a stihl 032av that runs like a bear and starts pretty good but it wont idle.
I tried adjusting the idle screw but did not seem to have any effect on it. I was told by a dealer over the phone that its probably not holding vacuum and therefore probably not worth fixing because its such an old saw. Well i dont care what the dealer said i love my 032av. I thinking about rebuilding it as im sure this would probably cure the vacuum (if thats even the idle issue) problem.
My question i guess is there a bigger cylinder that i can use on my 032av instead of the stock one. Something that will put out more power? If so where can i get parts for this saw. Seems stihl discontinued all parts for it.

I want to get her back to like new condition. Also it has a 20' bar on it what do you guys think about 24' or maybe even 28'. I do cut up trees with it but also slice trees to make log tables ect.
Thanks for your help. Unfortunatly parts for that saw have been discontinued, you might be able to find some on ebay/craigslist to repair yours. I looked up on my stihl site for a price for a piston and cylinder and it is telling me that its $346.00 but is not available.

It might be available in other parts of the US. I would find a good stihl service center and give them the part number 3 and see if they can get one. But more then likely ebay is probably gonna be your best option. But honestly it sounds like a carb issue to me. I would start there and see what happens.
Check all your hoses and your intake boot also, might have a small pinhole in it. The 032's are a good old saw. Don't junk it.
A good running and looking one will still sell for around $150-200. One of the main problems is the ignition. There are a bunch of threads on here about that. Do a search for 032 or 031 ignition, you will find enough to read for a week. You can buy new pistons, rings, gaskets and some of the seals on northwood saw, other parts are on ebay. I would probably start with a carb. They are cheap and easy to find.
If that doesn't do it do a vacumn test and go from there. Brian D said: “ hello to all. I am new here. A 24' bar is to long and a 28' your dreaming unless your cutting cardboard with your 032. They are good old saws well worth fixing up, but still only around 50 cc's. Ebays loaded with 032 parts. Well i took apart my 032 to start cleaning all the junk off of it and as soon as i did i found the impulse line that goes from bottom of carb to bottom of cylinder was broken in half.

This i think is my entire problem with the idling and now also hard starting. Can i use a piece of hose that will fit or does it have to be stihl brand? I cant wait to change this line and see what happens. Also i know somebody said i was dreaming about a 28' bar but check out youtube. I guess its a toss up between a 20' or a 24' bar. Brian D said: “ well here in southern NY we just got hit by hurricane sandy and i had some trees come down on my property. My saw ran great for awhile but when it got hot it started bogging down before it would rev up.
When i would shut the saw off and try to restart it it would only start with the choke on? Is this a carb problem? Any help would be great as i still have plenty of wood to cutSounds like it could be a tank vent issue - try to restart it after opening the fuel cap, and close it again.
If that helps, it is the tank vent. Oh the 31's and 32's out in force.what saw troll said but also look at your other rubber parts as you impulse line was junk.if the diaphram or 'pedals' in you carb are note up to par it may not pump fuel as well as the tank gets low also if the line in the tank is in poor shape.you can still get the in tank fuel line. I t is not unusual for a saw that has been sitting run well for a bit then starts to go down hill as the older rubber parts ect. Wear out.also ck the carb boot. Good luck sap can.
